There is a rise in the popularity of urban farming/urban agriculture and what some simply call self-sufficiency. Included in urban agriculture is the idea of backyard chickens. If I could have chickens in my neighborhood I would find the following workshop very helpful.
Backyard Poultry Workshop
Presented by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service

This workshop is for beginners who either have a few chickens and want to learn more, or those who have considered raising a few chickens and want help getting started. It will cover: general backyard issues, including housing and breed types; feeding and managing the flock; disease issues and biosecurity.
