Taste of 2011- from Adult Services

As you can imagine, we read a lot. The following are just a few of the books we've read and really enjoyed in the last year and highly recommend for reading consumption.

A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
A dark and quiet book with lots to talk about in a discussion.










Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
Uplifting immigrant story filled with the trials of being a poor immigrant, school









The Faerie Ring by Kiki Hamilton
Devoured this book. It's the first book in what will be a trilogy and is full of action, suspense, love and the powerful Sidhe or “faeries”.












Outliers: the Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell
The factors that contribute to certain people's success in life. Right place, right time and hard work. Very interesting stories including the Beatles and Bill Gates. Also if you haven't anything else by Gladwell you should definitely check out The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference and Blink.











Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning
The finale of this beloved series. If you haven't read the series DO NOT start with this one. Go back and enjoy. The first one is Darkfever.












Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles
Loved this Young Adult novel. It's the classic story about a guy from the wrong side of town and the rich girl from the right side of town who, despite all obstacles against them, fall in love. Think West Side Story, Grease, Valley Girl etc.

Amber, from Reference Dept.:
Rain of Gold by Victor E. Villasenor
"This is the true story of two early 20th century Mexican families that immigrated to America. It's a beautiful love story between husband and wife and, also, a son and his parents."




Katie, Director of Library Services:
I Am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne and Chris Ayres (audio version)
"A fascinating behind the scenes glance at one of rock and roll's most notorious figures."





This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett
"An intimate and often hilarious combination of stories and anecdotes along with a poignant look at the death of Burnett's daughter (tearjerker)."






Kate, from Children's Dept.:
Jane Austen Ruined My Life by Beth Pattillo
"A little predictable but a fun, quick read."






Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
"A great combination of alternate history, steampunk, and coming-of-age with lots of danger and fantastic technology. I am looking forward to the next in the series."







Dark Life by Kat Falls
"The surface of the world has changed drastically, the people haven't. Outlaws, unhelpful bureaucrats, and little sisters are no easier to deal with just because you live at the bottom of the ocean. Amusing and slightly scary."





Lori, from Young Adult Dept.:
The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa
"This is a fantastic sequel to The Iron King. This book was just as action packed as the first and the romantic complications increase, as well. I can't wait for the third, The Iron Queen, due to be released in February of 2011."




The Devil Wears Plaid by Teresa Medieros
"I'm incredibly excited to read this book, partly because I follow the author on facebook and have been hearing about the characters for a while. I've just started and it definitely has me hooked with a great first meeting between the hero and heroine - who doesn't love a historical romance where the bride is stolen at the altar!"

What the staff is reading...

Me, Michelyn in Adult - reading Fire and Ice by Anne Stuart. The last one in her Ice series that I have not read. I'm enjoying it, but the romance is still not as believable as Bastien and Chloe's in Black Ice.

Kate in the Children's Dept - Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Lori in Teens - reading People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks for the Mt. Laurel Book Club

Katie, Director - reading Ice by Linda Howard. "It was a fairly enjoyable read, but it ended too quickly and it was a bit abrupt. The action and adventure in the novel was fast paced and overall a good way to pass an afternoon. Not her best work, but certainly not her worst."
